Utilizing the “ChatGPT” Application as a Digital Assistant in Civil Project Execution – A Practical Field Study from the Reconstruction Project of the Bakr Bin Ali Shrine

Abstract:

This research, conducted by Anwar Abd Al-Aali Abbas Alwan Al-Khafaji, explores the practical use of ChatGPT as a digital assistant in civil engineering execution through a live case study from the reconstruction of the Bakr Bin Ali Shrine in Iraq. The study highlights how ChatGPT supported engineers on-site by interpreting drawings, simplifying technical specifications, estimating quantities, preparing schedules, and enhancing decision-making. Beyond technical assistance, the application contributed to warehouse management, official correspondence, safety reporting, and conflict resolution. The research emphasizes that ChatGPT is not a replacement for human expertise but a supportive tool that improves efficiency, accuracy, and confidence in civil projects. It also outlines future prospects, including AI-integrated monitoring systems, sector-specific assistants, and AI-driven training platforms. The study concludes that artificial intelligence is becoming an essential partner in modern engineering practice, redefining the role of engineers and fostering smarter, more people-centered project execution.
