Spiritual Resources and Emotional Exhaustion: Religiosity as a Protective Factor against Burnout in Social Workers

Abstract:

This research study investigates the role of religiosity as a protective factor against burnout among social workers in German-speaking countries. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected from 122 social workers through standardized questionnaires measuring religiosity, burnout dimensions, workload, and job satisfaction. Statistical analyses, including correlations, regressions, and mediation models, demonstrated that higher religiosity is associated with lower emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, as well as with higher perceived performance. Among the dimensions of religiosity, spiritual coping emerged as the strongest predictor of reduced exhaustion. Additionally, job satisfaction was shown to mediate approximately 30% of the relationship between religiosity and burnout, highlighting its role in enhancing meaning and resilience in professional practice. The findings suggest that religiosity can serve as a valuable personal resource in social work, though structural workload remains the primary driver of burnout. Implications emphasize religion-sensitive, voluntary strategies for supporting resilience in practice.
